Tips for Beginners

Here are some techniques which a student may learn, no matter what their level and with little difficulty, even from the beginning phases without compromising their technique or their other learning. Of course a program like Jamorama Guitar Lessons would be very helpful.

  • Hammer On/Pull Off - A staple of rock and popular music is the hammer on and pull off technique. This is essentially a trill. Perform this by striking a note and then, without striking the string again, finger a higher note or remove a finger to sound a lower note.

  • Palm-Muting - Rest the right palm on the strings behind the pick while strumming. This is usually not taught to beginners but is a foundational style element of the vast majority of popular music. Varying the pressure on the strings will produce different tones.

  •  Bend - Strike a note and bend the string upward. The tone will ascend as the tension increases. This is one of the most common rock and blues techniques in the world and any guitarist must master this.

  •  Pick Slide - Just plain old fun and a good way to blow off steam. Take the edge of the pick and slide it down the length of the wound or unwound strings, depending upon the sound desired; a staple technique for rock players.

  • Try Some Effects - Just because one is a beginner doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the finer things in life. Purchase a few cheap “foot pedal” type effects and experiment with them for some fun.
